What is a VCSEL?

VCSEL stands for Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser. It's a laser diode that emits a narrow, circular beam directly out of the chip surface. Because they're small and efficient, hundreds can be packed into a mask-sized array.

The practical difference from an LED: a VCSEL projects a tight beam of roughly 20ยฐ, while an LED spreads light over about 120ยฐ. More of the light lands on your face instead of scattering into the room.

Is a laser mask actually better than an LED mask?

Better at delivering light. Not biologically different.

Both work through the same pathway โ€” photons absorbed by an enzyme called cytochrome c oxidase inside your cells' mitochondria. The genuine advantages of laser emitters are:

  • Beam control. ~20ยฐ beam angle versus ~120ยฐ for LED, so less light is wasted.
  • Spectral precision. A laser emits at a tight, specific wavelength. An LED spreads roughly ยฑ10โ€“20 nm around its stated figure, so some of its output sits outside the most useful range.
  • Power density. Laser arrays can deliver a target dose in a shorter session.

One claim you should ignore โ€” including when other brands make it: that laser light "penetrates deeper because it's coherent." Coherence is lost within the first 1โ€“2 mm of skin as photons scatter off cells and collagen. Penetration depth is determined by wavelength; biological effect is determined by dose. Published photobiology research has consistently found that coherent and non-coherent light produce comparable results when wavelength and dose are matched.

Does light therapy for skin actually work, or is it hype?

It works โ€” within limits, and the limits are worth knowing.

Photobiomodulation is one of the better-researched areas in cosmetic dermatology. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis covering 31 randomised controlled trials found LED light therapy beneficial for skin rejuvenation and blemish-prone skin. An often-cited 2007 split-face randomised trial of 76 participants using 633 nm and 830 nm light measured up to a 36% reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and a 19% improvement in skin elasticity over four weeks, with increases in collagen and elastin confirmed on skin biopsy.

What it will not do: replace a facelift, erase deep set lines, remove scars, or produce dramatic change in days. It's a gradual, cumulative treatment.

What does each wavelength do?
  • Blue ~415 nm โ€” reaches the epidermis (surface); studied for the bacteria associated with blemishes.
  • Red ~630โ€“660 nm โ€” reaches ~1โ€“3 mm into the dermis; studied for fine lines, firmness, and calming visible redness.
  • Near-infrared ~810โ€“850 nm โ€” reaches deeper dermal layers; studied for deeper support of repair and inflammation.
  • Infrared ~1064 nm โ€” deepest of the group; deep dermal firmness (evidence still emerging).
How does the light actually change my skin?

Red and near-infrared photons are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase, part of the energy-production chain inside mitochondria. This releases nitric oxide that had been blocking the enzyme, which does three things: cellular energy production (ATP) increases, blood microcirculation improves, and mild signalling molecules are released that prompt fibroblasts โ€” your collagen-producing cells โ€” to become more active.

More active fibroblasts means more collagen and elastin over time. That's the mechanism behind firmer-looking, smoother-looking skin.

How long until I see results?

Published research measures meaningful change at 8โ€“12 weeks of consistent use.

Many people notice something earlier โ€” around weeks 2โ€“3, skin often looks brighter and plumper. That's genuine, but it's mostly improved circulation and hydration rather than structural change. The collagen-related improvements take longer because collagen remodelling is slow.

Be sceptical of any brand promising visible results in one week. We'd rather set the expectation honestly than have you disappointed in month two.

If I use it twice as long, will I get results faster?

No โ€” and this is one of the most useful things to understand about light therapy. Photobiomodulation follows what researchers call a biphasic dose response. Too little light does nothing. The right dose produces the effect. Too much can reduce the benefit or reverse it entirely. More is genuinely not better.

Stick to the recommended session length. Consistency over weeks matters far more than duration of any single session.

How often should I use it?

Daily use of about 10 minutes for the first 8โ€“12 weeks, then 3โ€“4 times weekly for maintenance.

Will results differ depending on my age or skin type?

Somewhat. Skin with more accumulated sun damage and slower cell turnover often shows more visible change, simply because there's more to improve. Safety & Suitability

Is it safe?

For most healthy adults using it as directed, yes. Red and near-infrared light therapy has a well-established safety record and does not damage skin the way UV light does โ€” it carries no cancer risk and doesn't cause burns at correct intensities.

The three genuine risk areas are: eye exposure, heat, and users who are light-sensitive because of medication or a medical condition. Each is covered below.

Is it safe for my eyes? Do I need goggles?

Eye safety is the most important question you can ask about any device worn on your face. What to look for in any mask: an IEC 60825-1 laser classification of Class 1 or Class 1C. Class 1 means eye-safe under all reasonably foreseeable conditions of use. Class 1C is the classification created specifically for skin-contact cosmetic devices. Anything rated Class 2, 3R or higher carries a genuine viewing hazard and should not be worn near your eyes.

Have there been safety problems with light therapy masks?

Yes, and you should know about it.

In July 2019, Johnson & Johnson voluntarily recalled the Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Mask. The company's stated reason was that for a small subset of people with certain underlying eye conditions, and for users taking medications that increase eye light-sensitivity, there was a theoretical risk of eye injury. Reported visual effects were rare โ€” Neutrogena associated them with about 0.02% of masks sold โ€” and generally transient.

The lesson isn't that light masks are dangerous. It's that eye protection design and honest contraindication warnings matter, and that if you're light-sensitive for any reason you need to check before using one.

Can I use it if I have melasma or dark spots?

Please read this one carefully โ€” it matters more in this region than most.

There is no reliable evidence that red or near-infrared light improves melasma, and there are two real risks:

  • Heat can aggravate melasma. Melasma is heat-sensitive, and any device that warms the skin can worsen it.
  • Blue light can stimulate pigment production, particularly in Fitzpatrick skin types IIIโ€“VI โ€” which describes a large proportion of people in the UAE and wider GCC.

If you have melasma or are prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: speak to a dermatologist before using any light device. If you proceed, patch test a small area for two weeks first, use the red and near-infrared modes rather than blue, keep sessions short, and stop immediately if pigmentation darkens.

Is it safe for darker skin tones?

For red and near-infrared light, yes. Unlike IPL or laser hair removal, photobiomodulation does not target melanin, so it does not carry the burn or pigment-damage risk those treatments do on deeper skin tones.

The nuances are blue light and heat, both of which can trigger a pigment response in some people. Patch test first, and read the melasma answer above.

Can I use it with retinol or tretinoin?

Not in the same session. Retinoids increase your skin's light sensitivity and leave it more reactive.

Use the mask in the morning and your retinoid at night, or leave several hours between them. If you're taking oral isotretinoin, check with your prescriber before using any light device.

What medications or conditions make this unsafe?

Do not use, or check with your doctor first, if any of these apply:

  • Medications that increase light sensitivity: isotretinoin and topical retinoids; tetracycline, doxycycline and certain other antibiotics; some diuretics and antifungals; St John's Wort; certain chemotherapy agents.
  • Conditions: photosensitive epilepsy โ€” avoid any pulsed or flashing light mode entirely; lupus, porphyria, or any diagnosed photosensitivity disorder; active skin cancer or any undiagnosed lesion in the treatment area; any eye condition affecting light sensitivity or the retina.

If in doubt, ask your doctor. This list isn't exhaustive.

Can I use it while pregnant?

There's no evidence of harm, but there's also no safety data specifically in pregnancy โ€” no one has run those trials. The responsible answer is to check with your doctor first.

Does it hurt or get hot?

No pain. Light therapy is a comfortable, non-invasive treatment. You'll see bright light through the mask and may feel mild warmth.

If the device becomes uncomfortably hot at any point, stop using it. Excess heat is not part of how this works, and it's the main thing that can aggravate pigmentation.

Is it safe for sensitive or rosacea-prone skin?

Red and near-infrared light is generally well tolerated by sensitive skin, and red light has been studied for its calming effect on visible redness โ€” though the evidence there is preliminary rather than strong.

If your skin is highly reactive, start with shorter sessions two or three times a week and build up. Patch test on a small area first.

Can children use it?

We recommend it for adults 18 and over. There's no research on light therapy masks in children, and children's eyes transmit more light to the retina than adults' do.

How to Use It

Where does it fit in my skincare routine?

On clean, dry, bare skin โ€” before serums and moisturiser.

Light penetrates skin, not product. Anything sitting on the surface (makeup, sunscreen, oils, thick creams) reflects or absorbs light before it reaches your skin. Cleanse, dry, treat, then apply your skincare afterwards.

Should I apply a serum first?

No. Apply serums after your session. Your skin's circulation is elevated immediately afterwards, which is a good moment for actives โ€” with the exception of retinoids, which are better kept to a separate time of day.

Can I use it with makeup or sunscreen on?

No. Both block light. Always start with a properly cleansed, dry face.

Morning or evening?

Either. Choose whichever you'll actually do consistently โ€” consistency is the single biggest predictor of results.

If you use retinoids at night, morning sessions work better.

Can I use it more than once a day?

There's no benefit. See the biphasic dose response question above โ€” exceeding the optimal dose can reduce the effect rather than increase it.

Can I use it alongside other treatments?
  • Injectables and fillers โ€” generally fine, but leave a few days after treatment and follow your practitioner's guidance.

How do I clean it?

Wipe the inner surface with a soft, slightly damp cloth or an alcohol-free wipe after each use, and let it dry completely. Never submerge it. Never use abrasive cleaners on the emitter surface.

Certification, Claims & Regulation

Is it FDA-cleared?

No โ€” and it's worth explaining what that phrase actually means, because it's one of the most stretched claims in this category.

"FDA cleared" is not "FDA approved." Clearance under a 510(k) submission means a device was shown to be substantially equivalent to one already on the market. Approval is a far more rigorous process reserved for high-risk devices. The two are often used interchangeably in marketing. They shouldn't be.

The Peakspan LaserMask is not FDA-cleared and is not currently open for paid orders. It is intended as a cosmetic wellness device, not a medical device. Market-specific conformity and release information will be published before checkout opens.

One thing worth knowing as a buyer: several brands currently market themselves as "the only FDA-cleared laser mask." They can't all be correct. A genuine clearance has a public K-number you can look up yourself on the FDA's device database. If a brand won't give you the number, treat the claim as marketing rather than fact.

What certifications should I look for in any light therapy mask?

Ask any brand for these, and ask for the test report referencing the specific model number โ€” not a logo on a webpage:

  • IEC 60825-1 โ€” laser safety classification. Class 1 or 1C is what you want.
  • IEC 62471 โ€” photobiological safety of the LED emitters (eye and skin risk group).
  • IEC 60601-1 โ€” electrical safety: it won't shock you or overheat dangerously.
  • IEC 60601-1-2 โ€” electromagnetic compatibility: it won't interfere with other electronics.
  • ISO 10993 โ€” biocompatibility of the materials touching your face (non-irritating, non-sensitising).
  • ISO 13485 โ€” the manufacturer operates a controlled, traceable medical-device quality system.

Why don't you show doctor or celebrity endorsements?

Because doing it properly is the only legal way, and we won't fake it. Using a named doctor or celebrity to sell a product requires their signed agreement โ€” quoting a dermatologist's general praise of LED therapy on a product page creates an implied endorsement, which is unlawful in most markets and specifically restricted in the UAE.

Is this a medical device?

That's a deliberate positioning choice, not a shortcut. Why don't you claim it treats acne or rosacea?

Because those are medical conditions, and claiming to treat them would be both a regulatory matter and, more importantly, a claim that outruns the evidence for at-home devices.

What we can tell you accurately: blue light has been studied for its effect on the bacteria associated with blemishes, and red light for its effect on visible redness. A 2006 controlled study using alternating 415 nm and 633 nm light reported roughly a 46% mean reduction in blemish count over its follow-up period. That's a real finding. It's also not the same as a medical treatment for a diagnosed condition, and we won't present it as one.
